In the wake of severe damage caused by heavy rainfall in Belagavi district, leaders of the Janata Dal (Secular) have formally urged the state government to significantly hike the compensation for damaged houses. A memorandum was submitted to the State Housing Minister, B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, during his visit to Bailhongal on Saturday, December 13.
Demand for Five-Fold Increase in Relief
The JD(S) delegation, led by District President Shri Shankar B. Madalagi, pointed out a stark disparity in the relief amounts provided by successive governments. The leaders argued that the current compensation of ₹1 lakh provided by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government is insufficient to cover the costs of rebuilding lives.
They presented a comparative case for the increase:
Previous JD(S) Governance: During H.D. Kumaraswamy’s tenure, up to ₹12 lakh was provided for house construction in flood-hit regions like Kodagu and Madikeri.
BJP Governance: Under B.S. Yediyurappa’s leadership, the compensation stood at ₹5 lakh.
Current Demand: The JD(S) is now demanding that the Congress government increase the current ₹1 lakh relief to at least ₹5 lakh per damaged household.
The memorandum was submitted in Bailhongal town, urging the Housing Minister to take immediate action to alleviate the distress of rural families. Redmi Watch 5 Lite, 1.96" Amoled, Advanced in-Built GPS, 5 ATM, 18 Day Battery, Bluetooth Calling with AI Noise Reduction, Always on Display, Light Gold
